Known as one of the oldest and prettiest wineries in the Napa Valley. Established in 1882, the estate features a stone castle built into the hillside overlooking a Chinese garden, lake, and vineyards that reach to the base of Mt. St. Helena.
We make classic style wines promoting balance, elegance and age-ability. We defined our winemaking style in 1972. Fruit, first and foremost, poised by an underlying structure of natural acidity for an elegant and balanced wine. We start by planting the right grape in the right place, then capture and carefully nurture the natural flavors and structure without treading on the inherent qualities of the fruit.
Four decades of experience with the same varietals and vineyards have earned Chateau Montelena recognition as a world-class winery.
In 1976, our 1973 Chardonnay won the Judgment of Paris; a historical tasting where 10 California wineries blind tasted against French wines. Books, documentaries, and the Bottle Shock movie tell the story of this event.
Jade Lake has a dreamlike, enchanting quality. The pavilions and islands, connected to the mainland by crooked bridges, rise like the sentinels over the still waters.
Winemaking here is regarded as a continuous process that begins in the vineyard, which is why we use the term "winegrowing". Exceptional wine can only be made with exceptional grapes.
